low-tech gun control

Jon Stewart had a great anti-rant about anti-gun control rants online this afternoon –

www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-january-8-2013/scapegoat-hunter---gun-control?

It starts out with some grotesque humor, but then he gets serious, and I think even more effective.  I'm somewhat to the right of him on this issue, since I'm comfortable with guns and have owned them at various times in my life (but have never replaced the last two, stolen during a big party).

I'd go along with the idea of going back to muskets, even with bayonets.  Adam Lanza could shoot one six-year-old with it, and maybe spike one or two more as they ran screaming out of the classroom.  But overall there would be less blood spilled.

You can't legislate sanity.
American culture attributes tremendous juju to guns, especially for frightened marginalized people. Are those pea shooters worth a fart in a hurricane against half the military budget of the entire planet?

Yeh, every time someone runs the "2nd Amendment" excuse up the flag in these discussions, I keep reminding them that the exact wording of the "right to bear arms" inclusion is specifically intended for "a well regulated militia." Not for sport, fun, entertainment, murder or mayhem.

I find it frightening that a guest or guests in your home could have the temerity to steal firearms, both for their gall and disrespect for you, and in what they would do with a stolen firearm.which could possibly be traced back to you and cause you legal difficulty..

I'll go along with muskets and bayonets when the cops, criminals and government do.

Of course, that also assumes we go back to hand cranked printing presses as the 1st Amendment couldn't have predicted the internet, or even offset printing or Xerox machines, or phones or telegraphs or...

And there we have, in a nutshell, the answer to the gun-rights canard "Switzerland has lots of guns too, obviously US guns aren't the problem."

The NRA and fellow travelers see themselves in a balance of terror with their own duly elected officials and law enforcement personnel. And in an arms race with "the criminals" (a somewhat useless concept in addressing killing spree shootings) that can only ever be "won" by adding guns to both sides of the scales. This just seems crazy to the rest of the planet. I'm also aware that this doesn't trouble American Exceptionalists one iota.

So yes, perhaps the problem is less with "guns", and more with gun rights.

If you think the problem is encapsulated in an individual right, whether it's gun rights, freedom of speech, or any other personal liberty, than we have nothing to discuss. Nothing. Your world view is so alien to me that there is no chance of enough reconcilation for any meaningful dialouge. By that statement, you have made it clear that you are my enemy, and I will do everything I can to oppose you.
