Grandmastery
(Over on sff.net, I've gotten a few messages from people who found out I was named a SFWA Grand Master . . . )

Well, guys, I've known for weeks that I've been living under the same roof as
a Grand Master, but I haven't let it cow me. I don't let him put on airs, and
in fact make him take off the tiara at the dinner table.

Since there have been 27 other Grand Masters before me, I suspect they should
have changed the title somewhere along the way. Like "Pretty Grand Master,"
"Good Master," and finally "Okay Master," which means your dog sometimes obeys
you.

Seriously, it is a welcome honor. If I had a list in front of me, I know I
could come up with several people who deserve it more than I do. But I don't
have the list, and I'm not gonna look very hard for it.

Joe

Congrats! While it's an august list, I'm sure you'll do your best to make it one person longer. :)

[The tiara and six bucks will get you a diet-mocha-latte-grande-poomba-venti-crabby-patty at BarStucks. And the lady behind the counter would really appreciate it if you'd step to the left while you're waiting. Of course, if you went to a DunkinDonuts the coffee would be cheaper...]

Hmm...as long as you could still appreciate a good single malt, "grand master" seems well deserved, but now, I don't know... I guess it all depends on those stories after all. - Rikk

Congratulations! You've always been a Grand Master, as far as I am concerned.

Congrats. I was extremely happy to hear you were getting the shiny new title. Wear it with honor, pride, and dignity... but never let it go to your head. It still won't get you out of doing the dishes, I suspect. :>

I'd say you're at least a $999.99 Master.

Definitely falls into the categories of both "well deserved" and "about bloody time."

(I can forgive them the latter, because, well, there's only one GM award each year. We can be glad to be in a genre that has many very talented people in it.)

Congratulations - this is very well deserved. I've read The Forever War multiple times and continue to recommend it to friends. You are certainly a Grand Master. Well done!

Just remember that when the morning comes, and your hangover from the celebration the night before is still raging inside your head, you have trash to take out.

Hear! Hear!

[Just remember to remove the tiara for the banquet. Also, I understand that laurel leaves are more ecologically acceptable.]

Congratulations! If anything, a tad overdue IMO, but what the hey. The tiara is still just as shiny.

As far as I can see, since your auspicious debut your work has always and continues to this day to do honor to you and your genre, and the recognition is well deserved.

Congratulations, Joe: and a highlight at the end of what seems to have been a rough year for you.

Congrats!
You totally deserve this. I got "Mindbridge" in a collection of SF books from a family friend when I was 11 or so, and I've been hooked on your stuff ever since.
